In a recent study by the International Centre for East African Running Science (ICEARS) and the University of Glasgow, UK. Institute of Membrane and Systems Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK
Twenty eight fitness matched competitors were tested during the 2007, 8
days European Trans Alp mountain bike
stage race. Mean ambient temperatures were 35C. One group consumed a
normal sports drink, the other group consumed 4:1 which is 4 parts
carbohydrate to 1 part whey protein.
The result; total race time was significantly (10%) shorter in 4:1
group 2326 minutes Vs 2591 minutes. Core temperature was also
significantly better as was fluid retention.
So what does this mean to me?
Well the benefits for racing are obvious; with the 4:1 group showing
more than 10% better overall performance than the normal sports drink
it’s a no brainer.
But what’s more interesting is the potential benefit to your training.
By simply changing your sports drink you are going to be able to put in
better quality workouts day in day out with improved recovery.
How?
Well despite going 10% faster on day one, the Trans Alp athletes
recovered sufficiently to go 10% faster the next day, and the next and
the next for the whole 8 days.
Now imagine this as a repeated training block.
